* BILL WRIGHT RSW RGI DA (SCOTTISH 1931 - 2016), CHANGING NIGHT SKY watercolour on paper, signed mounted, framed and under glass image size 30cm x 43cm, overall size 54cm x 66cm Note: Bill Wright's talent first became evident when he was a boy, drawing endlessly for amusement while bedbound with illness. He went on to study painting at Glasgow School of Art and became an award-winning watercolourist, constantly inspired by was seascape and ever-changing sky on the Kintyre peninsula where he had a second home. Glasgow-born Wright, the son of a shipyard plater, was brought up in Partick and started his schooling at the city’s Dowanhill Primary before being evacuated to Dunoon during the Second World War. After returning home he attended Hyndland Senior Secondary and despite being discouraged by his parents, who would have preferred him to have a “proper job”, in 1949 he began his studies at Glasgow School of Art. They were interrupted by national service – a duty he felt hindered the progression of his art career. He served at Catterick army garrison but was a pacifist who abhorred war and dismissed the opportunity to be promoted to Sergeant as an army career held no interest. His first teaching post was at East Park School in Glasgow’s Maryhill. He then moved in 1965 to St Patrick’s High School in Dumbarton where he spent two years before becoming art adviser for the area at the age of 36. Over the next two decades he fostered the idea of instilling a cultural interest in art among pupils. He formed working groups to reform teaching of first and second-year students, encouraged forward-looking principal teachers and recruited many young teachers. His ethos was that teachers were not just there to create artists but to give all children a good art experience. He also established a residential art course for school children, at the Pirniehall residential educational facility at Croftamie in Dunbartonshire, where youngsters from different backgrounds could investigate the idea of furthering an art career through experiencing a range of different mediums in an art camp environment. And he is said to have been instrumental in encouraging the implementation of Scotland’s Standard Grade art and design qualification. However, he suffered from the chronic arthritic condition ankylosing spondylitis which, by the age of 55, forced him to take early retirement from his post in the education department of Strathclyde Regional Council. Meanwhile, as he had strived to enthuse youngsters with his own passion for art, he had been elected, in 1977, to the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour. A member of the Glasgow Arts Club for many years, he was also an elected member of the Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts and Paisley Art Institute, served as president of the Scottish Artists’ Benevolent Association for 14 years and was a Scottish Arts Council lecturer, touring the country discussing art. But perhaps his own greatest inspiration was the view from a cottage he stumbled upon half a century ago, seven miles from Campbeltown on the Mull of Kintyre. He rented the property at Bellochantuy and set up a studio there where he drew on the vistas stretching 180 degrees, encompassing sea, beach, rocks and sky. He was utterly smitten by the area and was ultimately bequeathed the cottage by the owner who had become a close family friend. Over the years he came to know the area intimately and was fascinated by the constantly changing moods of the sea and light of the sky which formed the majority of his output. One large body of work, "Towards Islay", focused on the view from the back of the cottage. He captured the patterns and waves of the sea, sometimes adding a bird, limpit, mermaid’s purse, rock lines or some seaweed. But at times his works were very abstract and symbolic, concentrating on themes of nature and transience. He was hung in all the major shows in Scotland and in galleries across the country from Aberdeenshire to Edinburgh, Glasgow and south of the border. His work also features in public collections of Stirling and Strathclyde Universities, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh and the Educational Institute of Scotland. And he was recognised with The Laing Prize for Landscape and Seascape and the RSW’s Sir William Gillies Award.

Her bold, exuberant and vibrantly joyful landscapes have led to sell-out shows in Scotland, London and the rest of the UK as well as exhibiting further afield in America, Russia and Sweden. Working in oils, her paintings use bold, vigorous, rhythmical strokes of impasto paint combined with delicate brushwork. This gives an exciting texture to the paint surface along with a sense of abstraction, which reflects nature’s contrasts and delicate harmonies. However, whilst the work is very painterly, it also has a strong sense of place. Winner of the 1999 MacRoberts Open Prize, the 2010 House for An Art Lover Award, and the Glasgow Art Club Award in 2016, Judith is also a member of the Paisley Art Institute, and a regular exhibitor at the Royal Glasgow Institute and Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour. Paintings in private collections in England, Ireland, France, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, Turkey, Mexico, Canada, USA, Bermuda, Australia, Hong Kong and the United Arab Emirates. Collections include: Sophos Plc Global Headquarters, Arisaig Partners, The Royal Bank of Scotland World Headquarters, University of Strathclyde, Glasgow Caledonian University, British Midland (on permanent exhibition in the Executive Lounge at Glasgow International Airport). Work also owned as part of the Helen Cargill Thomson Collection, gifted to the University of Strathclyde. Judith's highly successful 14th Feb - 10th March 2020 exhibition at Duncan R. Miller Fine Arts (London) was her fourteenth solo show at this prestigious London gallery.

* RALSTON GUDGEON RSW (SCOTTISH 1910 - 1984), SWALLOWS NEST watercolour on paper, signed framed and under glass image size 50cm x 32cm, overall size 57cm x 39cm Note: Ralston Gudgeon was a Scottish artist, best known for painting birds and animals mostly in gouache watercolour. He studied at the Glasgow School of Art in 1933 and won the Torrance Memorial Award of the Glasgow Institute. When Ralston Gudgeon was elected to the RSW in 1937, he became the youngest man ever to achieve that honour. In 2018, "The Scottish Wild Cat" by Gudgeon sold in our auction for £900 (hammer) which "signposted" a resurgence of collector interest in his work. This resurgence of buyer interest has continued unabated.

Born in Edinburgh in 1964, in 1988 he graduated with a BA Hons degree in Fine Art from Duncan of Jordanstone Art College, Dundee. Since a post-graduate diploma in 1989 his work has been shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions throughout the UK and in New York, Hong Kong and Holland. Mangan's work is fully figurative and especially distinctive. As we explore the paintings we become increasingly involved with his unique vision. Well-known for scenes of the race-course, the beach, the station, the fairground and the theatre, the work continues to develop and impress. She graduated from the Glasgow School of Art in 1964 where she had been taught by David Donaldson, once the Queen's portrait painter. Beginning her career as a teacher, by the age of twenty-seven she was a full-time artist. Walker is one of the most successful female painters working in Scotland today. Her talent in capturing the ever-changing light of the Scottish landscape is outstanding, and her subtle but strong still life paintings are highly-prized. Work is held in many public and corporate collections worldwide, including the Royal Bank of Scotland and Sara Lee Holdings. In The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction of 12th September 2021 "The Silver Table" (lot 562), a mixed media by Ethel Walker sold for £2600 (hammer) and in our December 2021 auction "The Lace Cloth" achieved £3000 (hammer).

BOB DYLAN (AMERICAN b. 1941), MR TAMBOURINE MAN lithograph on paper, signed and numbered 36/495, titled certificate verso mounted, framed and under glass image size 31.5cm x 61cm, overall size 73cm x 101cm Note: American singer Bob Dylan is considered by many to be one of the greatest songwriters of all time and has sold more than 125 million records. Although his musical success is common knowledge, it is slightly lesser known that Dylan also works in the visual arts, along with the musical arts. While on tour from 1989-1992, he created a series of drawings, comprising of scenes from life on the road. Originally they were compiled in a book and published in 1994, titled Drawn Blank . In 2006, Dylan was asked to create a museum exhibition from this body of work. Dylan had time to evolve the pictures, this time executing them in watercolours and gouache, giving them a more vibrant and expressive tone, and these became known as The Drawn Blank Series, with the originals being exhibited in 2007. In subsequent years, signed limited edition prints of these images were released and the collector demand has been "massive".

* JOHN BELLANY CBE RA HRSA (SCOTTISH 1942 - 2013), IL MONUMENTO AI CADUTI, SERAVEZZA, LUCCA watercolour on paper, signed framed and under glass image size 58cm x 75cm, overall size 76cm x 93cm Note: Collector demand has never been higher for the work of John Bellany and numerous examples have been sold in recent months by both McTear's and others at ever more impressive prices. In The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction of 29th May 2022 "The Finnon Smoker" by Bellany sold for £80,000 (hammer) and in the same sale, "Bass Rock Fable" (a 76 x 61cm unframed oil) sold for £12,000 (hammer). In our 21st August 2022 auction, lot 137 "The Newspaper Hat" (a 61 x 51cm oil) sold for £9500 (hammer). "Like-for-like" auction prices for original paintings are usually difficult to assess, but in The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction of April 2023, two Bellany paintings which had been acquired in our auctions in September and November 2014 were consigned for sale by the same owner. The original 2014 selling prices were £1800 and £4000 and the same paintings sold in April for £3800 and £7000 (all hammer prices). This equates to a growth in value of 86.2% in fewer than nine years. In The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction of 25th May 2023, lot 282, "Restless Wave" a 90 x 90cm oil (by Bellany) sold for £9000 (hammer) and in our auction of 9th November, lot 92, "Harbour" a 90 x 120cm oil by Bellany sold for £11000 (hammer). Most recently, "The Players" lot 50 in our auction of 28th March 2024 sold for £30000 (hammer).

Note: Since McTear's first promoted Hannah Frank's spectacular work in 2011, the prices for her ever more rare signed prints have continued to rise with many current prices being more than five times higher than those achieved barely a decade ago. The latest UK auction record figure for a single signed lithograph was most recently achieved (twice) in our auction on 24th October 2021 and now stands at £820 (hammer). Note 2: Hannah Frank was the last living link to the Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau period. She studied at the Glasgow School of Art and Glasgow University in the 1920`s and her haunting pen and ink drawings have been exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Scottish Academy and Royal Glasgow Institute. A series of lithographs of some of her 90 drawings were made in the 1960's and again in the 1980's to satisfy the demand for her work after exhibitions in Edinburgh and Glasgow. Only a relatively few of these prints were hand signed (in pencil) by Hannah and it's understood that only one print was ever editioned (numbered) in a conventional manner. A major exhibition at the Royal Glasgow Institute in 2006 brought her work to a new generation of admirers and received considerable press coverage. Her work toured for five years in the UK and the USA culminating in an exhibition at Glasgow University which opened on her 100th birthday 23rd August 2008. After her death, she was awarded a posthumous Honorary Doctorate at Glasgow University and Glasgow City Council`s Lord Provost`s Award For Art (2009).

* DANNY FERGUSON RSW RGI (SCOTTISH 1925 - 1993), AUTUMN, CULZEAN oil on canvas, signed, titled veso framed and under glass image size 51cm x 61cm, overall size 68cm x 78cm Note: Danny Ferguson was educated at Airdrie Academy from 1936-1942. He was an athletic youngster, playing football for (amongst others) Baillieston Juniors, Bedlay Juniors, Douglas Water Thistle and Blantyre Victoria (taking over the centre-half position from Jock Stein). Later in life, he was a keen snooker player, frequently championing the Glasgow Art Club, and enjoyed Curling. He began studying at GSA in 1941 but his studies were interrupted when he was called up. He joined the Royal Air Force in 1943 and served in the Far East. He re-joined GSA in 1947 and was awarded his diploma in Drawing and Painting in 1949. That same year he won a £30 prize at the Royal Scottish Academy annual competitions. From 1949-1950 he attended the Jordanhill Teacher Training College. He later combined a position as visiting lecturer at GSA with teaching in various Glasgow Schools. He returned to GSA as a full-time lecturer in 1968. In 1958 Ferguson married Margaret Dunn, also a graduate of the Glasgow School of Art, in Embroidery and Weaving. They had two children, Anne and David. Probably best known for his landscapes, still lifes and self-portraits. He exhibited regularly, had numerous one-man shows, and his work still hangs in many collections, including the Royal Collection. Danny Ferguson was elected a member of the RSW in 1969, having exhibited there from 1961. He had over 88 works exhibited at the Royal Glasgow Institute, from 1957. He was a member of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour. Ferguson also served as honorary secretary of the RGI for nine years and was also elected President of the Glasgow Art Club.

* BILL WRIGHT RSW RGI DA (SCOTTISH 1931 - 2016), SHORE FARM watercolour on paper, signed, titled label verso mounted, framed and under glass image size 40cm x 59cm, overall size 61cm x 81cm Note: Bill Wright's talent first became evident when he was a boy, drawing endlessly for amusement while bedbound with illness. He went on to study painting at Glasgow School of Art and became an award-winning watercolourist, constantly inspired by was seascape and ever-changing sky on the Kintyre peninsula where he had a second home. Glasgow-born Wright, the son of a shipyard plater, was brought up in Partick and started his schooling at the city’s Dowanhill Primary before being evacuated to Dunoon during the Second World War. After returning home he attended Hyndland Senior Secondary and despite being discouraged by his parents, who would have preferred him to have a “proper job”, in 1949 he began his studies at Glasgow School of Art. They were interrupted by national service – a duty he felt hindered the progression of his art career. He served at Catterick army garrison but was a pacifist who abhorred war and dismissed the opportunity to be promoted to Sergeant as an army career held no interest. His first teaching post was at East Park School in Glasgow’s Maryhill. He then moved in 1965 to St Patrick’s High School in Dumbarton where he spent two years before becoming art adviser for the area at the age of 36. Over the next two decades he fostered the idea of instilling a cultural interest in art among pupils. He formed working groups to reform teaching of first and second-year students, encouraged forward-looking principal teachers and recruited many young teachers. His ethos was that teachers were not just there to create artists but to give all children a good art experience. He also established a residential art course for school children, at the Pirniehall residential educational facility at Croftamie in Dunbartonshire, where youngsters from different backgrounds could investigate the idea of furthering an art career through experiencing a range of different mediums in an art camp environment. And he is said to have been instrumental in encouraging the implementation of Scotland’s Standard Grade art and design qualification. However, he suffered from the chronic arthritic condition ankylosing spondylitis which, by the age of 55, forced him to take early retirement from his post in the education department of Strathclyde Regional Council. Meanwhile, as he had strived to enthuse youngsters with his own passion for art, he had been elected, in 1977, to the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour. A member of the Glasgow Arts Club for many years, he was also an elected member of the Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts and Paisley Art Institute, served as president of the Scottish Artists’ Benevolent Association for 14 years and was a Scottish Arts Council lecturer, touring the country discussing art. But perhaps his own greatest inspiration was the view from a cottage he stumbled upon half a century ago, seven miles from Campbeltown on the Mull of Kintyre. He rented the property at Bellochantuy and set up a studio there where he drew on the vistas stretching 180 degrees, encompassing sea, beach, rocks and sky. He was utterly smitten by the area and was ultimately bequeathed the cottage by the owner who had become a close family friend. Over the years he came to know the area intimately and was fascinated by the constantly changing moods of the sea and light of the sky which formed the majority of his output. One large body of work, "Towards Islay", focused on the view from the back of the cottage. He captured the patterns and waves of the sea, sometimes adding a bird, limpit, mermaid’s purse, rock lines or some seaweed. But at times his works were very abstract and symbolic, concentrating on themes of nature and transience. He was hung in all the major shows in Scotland and in galleries across the country from Aberdeenshire to Edinburgh, Glasgow and south of the border. His work also features in public collections of Stirling and Strathclyde Universities, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh and the Educational Institute of Scotland. And he was recognised with The Laing Prize for Landscape and Seascape and the RSW’s Sir William Gillies Award.

* PAT DOUTHWAITE (SCOTTISH 1939 - 2002), STANDING WOMAN charcoal on paper, signed and dated '71 mounted, framed and under glass image size 48cm x 62cm, overall size 68cm x 83cm Note: "She should no longer be seen as an exotic maverick but acknowledged as one of the true originals of Scottish art." A concluding comment on Pat Douthwaite’s 1993 solo exhibition, made by The Scotsman’s art critic Edward Gage. The ‘maverick’ label is often attached to Douthwaite to encompass a variety of the artist’s more striking traits: her troubled personality, the restless, nomadic lifestyle that took her across the world in search of subjects and meaning and her complete disregard for anything that did not further the development of her artwork, despite it making her a difficult figure to manage and work with. A good example is an incident in which she broke into a house and stole back one of her paintings from a buyer whom she did not consider worthy of owning her work. This demanding, uncompromising commitment and all-encompassing focus on her work paid off. She developed and sustained a distinctive, signature style characterised by raw feeling and idiosyncratic lines. Douthwaite was fascinated by historical heroines including Greek deities, Mary Queen of Scots and the aviator Amy Johnson and often depicted them as well as herself. Her images of women remain the most powerful and popular of her works, truly encapsulating the pain and suffering women can experience and endure. This exploration of suffering means there is a violence in the work, yet Douthwaite often manages to retain fun, playful touches in their execution. Born in Glasgow in 1934, Douthwaite’s first exposure to creative expression was in the form of dance classes at the dancing school run by Margaret Morris, the bohemian partner of the Scottish Colourist John Duncan Fergusson. She eventually discontinued dancing and decided, aged twenty-four and with no artistic training, to become a painter. Douthwaite showed her work to Fergusson, who recognised her talent and encouraged her endeavours, though he suggested she avoid art school, as he had done. Thus, both Morris and Fergusson had a major impact on Douthwaite’s creative endeavours. Douthwaite’s ever-present wanderlust quickly took over and she left Glasgow to join an artistic community within William Crozier’s house in East Anglia. An informal artistic training in itself, she was surrounded by fellow artists including Robert Colquhoun, Robert MacBryde and Crozier himself. In her lifetime, her work was recognised and championed by key figures in the Scottish art world; including Richard Demarco, who mounted her first major exhibition in Scotland in 1967; Douglas Hall, the former Director of the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art and the artist and critic Edward Gage. Following her death, her popularity continues to increase as ever more collectors are drawn to her distinctive, expressive style and tales of her mysterious, maverick personality. The prestigious Scottish Gallery (Edinburgh) have long promoted Pat Douthwaite's work and her most recent solo show "Pat Douthwaite, On The Edge" was staged by the gallery between 4th and 27th February 2021.

* RALSTON GUDGEON RSW (SCOTTISH 1910 - 1984), CHAFFINCH watercolour on paper, signed framed and under glass image size 24cm x 19cm, overall size 30cm x 35cm Note: Ralston Gudgeon was a Scottish artist, best known for painting birds and animals mostly in gouache watercolour. He studied at the Glasgow School of Art in 1933 and won the Torrance Memorial Award of the Glasgow Institute. When Ralston Gudgeon was elected to the RSW in 1937, he became the youngest man ever to achieve that honour. In 2018, "The Scottish Wild Cat" by Gudgeon sold in our auction for £900 (hammer) which "signposted" a resurgence of collector interest in his work. This resurgence of buyer interest has continued unabated.

Fergusson was the active patron of the ‘New Scottish Group’ of young artists, and Morris was the secretary for several years, organising exhibitions and sales with other artists. They were the first people to hang pictures for sale on the railings of the Botanic Gardens in Glasgow, which was remembered for years and which is still revived from time to time He sketched and painted constantly, abroad and in Scotland. To make a living he joined the family firm of James, Morrison, McChlery & Co, auctioneers and valuers, who traded from the Crown Halls in Sauchiehall Street. During his work there he developed his knowledge and expertise, and reputation, in art and objects d’art, in which prosperous Glasgow families were well endowed. Before his untimely death in a car accident in 1969, Morris, produced a huge body of work of great variety: studies of industrial post-war Glasgow, glowing Scottish landscapes, vibrant impressionistic still lifes, and diverse abstracts.

* DONALD MACDONALD (SCOTTISH b. 1976), WRAP 8 charcoal on paper, initialled mounted, framed and under glass image size 75cm x 52cm, overall size 103cm x 78cm Note: Donald Macdonald was born on the Isle of Lewis in 1976 and after a short time in the Scottish Infantry he moved to Aberdeen and gained a BA Hons degree in Fine Art. After living and painting in Denmark and Glasgow for several years he returned home to the Isle of Lewis where he is now based. His work is held in various private collections around the UK, in Denmark, Hong Kong, Israel and the USA and in 2009 he was one of only three Scottish artists to feature in the BP Portrait Prize Award Exhibition. He was also the Scottish representative for the Mead Johnson International Exhibition in Evansville, USA. In 2013 he exhibited a commissioned painting in the Imperial War Museum in Manchester and later won a place in the 7th Figurativas painting and sculpture exhibition, held in the European Museum of Modern Art, Barcelona. In 2017 he won the Public Choice Award at the Art Gemini Prize and more recently he has been invited to show at the Columbia Threadneedle Prize (2018), The Lynn Painter Stainers Prize (2019), The Scottish Portrait Awards (2019), The Westmorland Landscape Prize (2019) and The Royal Scottish Academy (2019 & 2020).

* RAMSAY GILLIES, GOAT copper/sheet metal rotating sculpture of a goat raised on a wooden base, initialled "RG" to base 58cm high x 58cm long Note: Ramsay Gillies was born and raised in Edinburgh and attended Edinburgh College of Art, studying Graphic Design, life drawing and sculpture. He spent his working years as a graphic designer in Scotland, Bermuda, New York, Boston, London, coming home to Edinburgh in the mid-seventies. He returned to sculpture around five years ago with a simple resolve to avoid repetition and keep it quirky. Note: Margaret Ballantyne lives and works in Glasgow where she trained at the Glasgow School of Art. She is a professional member of Scottish Artists and Artist Craftsmen (SAAC), an Artist Member of both the Glasgow Society of Women Artists and the Paisley Art Institute, where she won the Col. Neville Award in 1993. She exhibits regularly at the Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts, the Royal Scottish Academy and the Royal Academy Summer Exhibitions. Margaret has had various acclaimed solo and mixed exhibitions throughout Scotland, as well as in London, Bath, and Eton and she exhibits regularly in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition (London). She was invited by the International Artist Magazine to contribute an article on her painting and method and her work was also chosen at The Mall Galleries for the Laing 1997 Calendar. In several recent years, the National Trust for Scotland has used her paintings for their Christmas cards. Margaret works in oils and mixed media and enjoys painting still lifes and landscapes at home in her studio and on travels abroad. She paints in the Scottish Colourist tradition.

Note: Claire Harrigan RSW was born in Kilmarnock in 1964. She grew up with both parents as art teachers and painters – her mother, Elspeth Harrigan, a respected botanical artist and her father, James Harrigan, the acclaimed landscape artist. Her childhood environment was full of creative stimulation and inspiration. Claire studied at Glasgow School of Art from 1982 – 86 graduating BA Hons in Fine Art (Drawing and Painting). Since Art School she has worked as a full time painter and travelled widely for inspiration, particularly in the West Indies, France, Portugal and Italy. In 1989 she was elected a Professional Member SAAC and in 1990 was elected a member of the RSW (Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour.) In 1992 (and subsequent editions) she was listed in "Who's Who in Art" (published by Art Trade Press Ltd), and in 1990, in "20th Century Painters and Sculptors" by Frances Spalding. Claire has been the recipient of many major awards including: 1990 - Lily Macdougall Award, SAAC, 1992 - James Torrance Memorial Award, RGI, 1996 - Latimer Award, RSA, 2002 - Artists Discovery Commission Award, Club Med, 2004 - Glasgow Arts Club Fellowship Award, RSW. In 2007 she wrote and had published “Abstract and Colour Techniques in Painting”. Her painting style is vibrant and bold in use of colour with a high key palette a permanent feature of her work. She paints distinctively with colour and abstract elements working well together in clever and mature compositions. She uses predominantly mixed media with acrylic, watercolour or gouache as a base platform upon which to build imagery in collage, pastel or other media. Th e key characteristics of my work are colour and light. I am not trying to recreate what is there, and although the subject matter is important as the instigator of the painting, gradually it becomes less significant as the emphasis changes to composing with colour, shape and texture. Claire Harrigan has work in many collections including those of Adam & Co. Bank, The Fleming Collection, Bank of Scotland, Heriot Watt University, South Ayrshire Council, Wigtownshire Educational Trust and Club Med and in private collections throughout the UK and beyond.

* MOIRA BEATY (SCOTTISH 1922 - 2015), DISTANT HILLS oil on board, signed framed image size 25cm x 35cm, overall size 34cm x 44cm Note: Moira went to Glasgow School of Art in 1939 where her contemporaries included Joan Eardley and Margot Sandeman. These three young women were regarded by their lecturers as the brightest stars of their generation. After one year as a student she was recruited to Bletchley Park where she worked as a code breaker, one of Churchill's 'corkscrew thinkers'. She returned to GSA in 1947 to complete her studies. Moira's enduring talent was recognised again in 2014 at the age of 92 with a sell-out exhibition in Kirkcudbright. Moira Beaty was a resolute and determined woman who was an integral part of the famous group at Bletchley Park who did much to aid the Allies' victory in the Second World War. She worked in Hut 8 where Alan Turing and Peter Twinn set up the Naval Enigma Code. Beaty was responsible to Twinn - the first mathematician to be recruited to Bletchley. ''I discovered something,'' Beaty modestly remarked years later, ''a code within a code. I was immediately moved to within the codebreakers and became a cryptographer working on the German Secret Service codes.'' The Twinn team was involved in breaking the secretive Abwehr codes which were even more complicated than the ordinary military messages. The information this provided to the Allies in such major operations as the desert campaign, the D-Day landings and the sinking of the battleship Tirpitz proved vital to the war effort. Her first solo exhibition was at the Open Eye Gallery in Edinburgh in 1979 and at the Collins Gallery in Glasgow. Her works were also seen at the Cadogan Contemporary Gallery in London and around Dumfries - notably at the Gracefield Arts Centre. In 2001 Gracefield held a major retrospective exhibition of both Moira and Stuart Beaty's works, entitled Full Circle. In 2014 Beaty officially opened the Kirkcudbright Summer Art Exhibition: Glasgow Girls 1920 - 1960, and held a solo exhibition in the town's Harbour Cottage Gallery. Both exhibitions were hugely popular and, at 92, Moira Beaty was still making a strong impression and gaining new collectors.

* HUGH GERARD BYARS (SCOTTISH b. 1957), PORTRAIT oil on canvas, signed unframed overall size 70cm x 60cm Note: Byars trained at The Glasgow School of Art and then at The Royal College of Art in London. In 2001 he received a major award from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation (USA). Nineteen examples of his work are recorded within notable public collections including City of London Corporation, The Peoples Palace (Glasgow), MOMA (Wales), The Fleming Collection (London), Guildhall Art Gallery, Cheltenham Art Gallery and Glasgow Museums and Art Galleries. Hugh lives and works in Glasgow. He is a contemporary of Howson and of the same school as Campbell and Currie, and like them concentrates on the human form, and scenes from his local city. He often takes his inspiration from the derelicts and dossers in his native Glasgow. These are his Partick people who he paints with sympathy, graphic simplicity and powerful humanity. Hugh is one of the ''New Glasgow Boys'' school of painters.

Note: Born in 1964, Stephen Conroy studied at the Glasgow School of Art between 1982-7. He quickly gained recognition and achieved considerable success before beginning his postgraduate study. In 1986 his degree show sold out and he also won the first prize for painting at the Royal Academy’s British Institute Fund Awards. Conroy was the youngest artist included in the notable Vigorous Imagination exhibition Edinburgh in 1987. Two years later he also held a solo exhibition at Marlborough Fine Art in London. His work appears in a number of public collections around Britain and abroad, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the National Portrait Gallery in London and Edinburgh.

* STANISLAW WYSOCKI (POLISH b. 1949), UNTITLED bronze sculpture, signed, numbered III/XII and dated 2003 to base 42cm high including base Note: Stanisław Wysocki was born in 1949 in Ełk. In 1978-80 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Poznań, and later in (1981–86) at the Hochschule der Kunste in Berlin, in the studio of prof. J.H. Lonas. He obtained a diploma in sculpture in 1986. During his studies in Berlin, he worked as an apprentice in the famous sculpture foundry "Herman NOACK Bildgieserei", where he met many world-renowned sculptors, incl. Henry Moore. Collaboration in making sculptures resulted in a stay in 1990 in his studio Pery Green near London. Currently, the artist lives in Wrocław. He has about 30 individual and several dozen collective exhibitions. His works have been presented, among others in Germany, Italy, Denmark, Sweden, England, Turkey and in numerous galleries in the country.

Note: Kirsty Wither is a fine artist who studied in Scotland and from her studio now in Brighton paints brightly coloured and textured still lifes, figures and landscapes. Kirsty Wither was born in 1968 and studied at Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen from 1986 to 1990. Her paintings are as much about the surface quality as the subject matter, as she applies vibrant layers of oil paint to achieve the desired outcome. Since 1989 she has been selected to appear in group exhibitions throughout the UK and from 1995 has had regular solo exhibitions in Glasgow, Edinburgh and London. She was elected Artist Member of the Chelsea Arts Club in 2004 and has many works in private and public collections worldwide. Her galleries include Portland Gallery (London), Open Eye Gallery (Edinburgh), Duncan Miller Fine Art (London), Capital Club (Dubai) and Mansfield Park Gallery (Glasgow).
