* HILDA GOLDWAG (SCOTTISH 1912 - 2008), SPRING oil on board, signed, titled verso framed image size 77cm x 107cm, overall size 96cm x 126cm Note: Hilda Goldwag was born into a Jewish family in Vienna, Austria on 28 April 1912. Her father, Moses, also an artist, died when she was nine. Goldwag attended Anna Schantruch’s Art Classes for gifted artistic children and, at the age of 14, helped paint murals for the new St Leitener Kindergarten. She graduated from the Graphiscme Staatslemtr und Versuchs Anmalt, Vienna with special commendation in 1938, but following the Anschluss (annexation of Austria) in March 1938, subsquently managed to secure a permit allowing her to travel to Scotland in March 1939. Her family was due to follow her six months later, but World War II was declared the day they received their travel permits, causing them to be trapped in Austria. In 1942, during The Holocaust, they all were murdered in concentration camps: her mother at Treblinka and her brother, sister, brother-in-law and nephew at MalyTrostenets. Her sadness at the loss of family members can be felt in much of Goldwag's art. In Glasgow in 1940 Goldwag met fellow refugee and lifelong friend Cecile Schwarzchild, and both undertook war work as turners at McGlashlan's engineering works. Post-war Goldwag became head designer at Friedlanders in Hillington, designing scarves for Marks & Spencer (1945-55). She also worked as a freelance illustrator for Collins Publishers, and later, as a part-time occupational therapist at Forresthall Hospital (1962-75). She resumed painting and exhibiting in the 1950s, working principally with oils and a palette knife, mostly outdoors and in situ, carrying both paintings and materials with her on the local buses. Her subjects included the nearby Forth and Clyde Canal, the tenements and warehouses of Cowcaddens, and, from the 1980s, exuberant flower pieces, panoramic farm landscapes, waterscapes, and ‘imagined’ figure paintings. Although most of her work was done in the Glasgow area, she did travel on holiday to Italy, Holland and the islands of Scotland. Her paintings are usually large and dramatic. It is amazing that Hilda was able to see any happiness in her views of her world. Others would have been blighted by the traumas she experienced. She exhibited in Gourock, Greenock and at the Lillie Art Gallery, and received awards from the Glasgow Society of Women Artists. She was also a professional and exhibiting member of the Scottish Society of Women Artists, the Paisley Art Club and the Milngavie Art Club. In 2005, an exhibition of her work was held at the Collins Gallery, Glasgow. She died in Glasgow, Scotland on 28 January 2008. Thirteen of her works are held in UK public collections including Strathclyde University, The Ben Uri Collection (London) and the Scottish Jewish Archives Centre. " ...deeply embedded in the European tradition and, coming from the city of Klimt, Schiele, Freud and Wittgenstein, as an outsider in Glasgow, she documents a city moving from the old to the new. As well as people, she paints buildings, townscapes as designs, old tenements giving way to the modern ".

* DAVID COOK (SCOTTISH b. 1957), THE LAST HARVEST oil on board, signed, titled and dated 1986 label verso framed and under glass image size 113cm x 82cm, overall size 126cm x 95cm Note: David Cook was born in 1957 in Dunfermline and attended Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in Dundee from 1979-84. He was recognised early as an exceptional talent, winning the first prize at the annual student show at the Royal Scottish Academy in 1983. He then won a travel award which took him to Paris, Amsterdam, Belgium and Cyprus. He won the Guthrie Award at the RSA in 1985 and was given Scottish Arts Council Awards in 1985, 1988 and 1989. He has exhibited irregularly but notably at The Traverse Theatre in 1982 and with the 369 Gallery throughout the following decade. In the 1990s he was already visiting "Seagreens" (his current home) and staying at a cottage at Benholm, two miles to the North also frequented by Alberto Morocco and Ian Eadie. Cook travelled regularly in these years to Turkey, the Balearics and significantly, at the invitation of the Everard Reed Gallery, to Southern Africa for three months in 1997. He was able to secure the tenancy at Seagreens shortly after his return and eventually bought it in 2004. Joan Eardley worked at Catterline, just eleven miles to the north of Seagreens and like Eardley sixty years earlier, David Cook feels the emotional draw of the sea and the wildness of the coastal environment. This sense of belonging is now deeply embedded; he can see the seasons change and paint the whole calendar; the daffodils of Spring, wild flowers of Summer, the Autumn skies and bleak drama of Winter are all on show: immediate, raw and compelling. David Cook is represented by The Scottish Gallery (Edinburgh) and his most recent solo show there was "Forged by the Sea" 29th June - 22nd July 2023. His known public collections include: The City of Edinburgh Council, Dundee Art Gallery & Museums, Dunfermline District Museum, Glasgow Museums & Galleries, The Hunterian, Kirkcaldy Museum & Gallery, Knysna Fine Art (South Africa), The Scottish Arts Council, University of Dundee, University of Warwick, Art in Healthcare and in corporate collections in the UK.

Her studies were interrupted by World War II, during which time she served with the Women's Auxiliary Air Force. In 1946 Pope resumed her studies at Edinburgh College of Art, then undertook teacher training at Moray House. Pope held several teaching posts in primary and private schools, including Lansdowne House in Edinburgh and the role of art mistress at Oxenfoord Castle School, Midlothian. Pope took up a post as art lecturer at Moray House in the mid-1960s, which she held until her early retirement in 1973. Upon retirement from teaching, Pope concentrated on painting at her home, Weaver's Cottage in Carlops. She is linked to The Edinburgh School of artists, having studied under Sir William Gillies at Edinburgh College of Art and formed friendships with fellow artists such as Joan Eardley. Like many artists of the Edinburgh School, Pope worked in both oil and watercolour. She primarily painted still life and landscapes. Not so for Perpetua; she was a conscientious friend with a warmth and openness that attracted all, regardless of age or profession. She was a painter and many artists are numbered among her friends. To these she was generous, even deferential, and she admired and collected many others’ paintings, as this exhibition amply illustrates. She worked in oil and watercolour, like many of the Edinburgh School, dividing her energies between the two media, never letting herself become stale or lapse into repetition. This memorial exhibition, featuring her work and her collection pays tribute to one of the most enduring and warmest personalities in the Scottish art world.
