An exceptional and fine C18th French gilt brass and enamel and marble Skeleton clock in glass oval dome. PROVENANCE: part of the 86 Eaton Square, London, clearance for The Baroness Rawlings (120 lots in this auction 29th January; & forthcoming 5th March Specialist Vintage Auction).
The clock with a bronze eagle finial over a blue enamel moon phrase dial, against a starry blue background, an enamel chapter ring inscribed with days of the month, the clock face, surrounded with ornate filigree work, is with black numerals, days in French and seconds, and in front of the exposed clock work mechanism; The base elaborately adorned with gold floral and cherub motifs, and two Adam style classical urns to either side, and below two oval panels portraying father time with scythe and dog, and the other panel with soft pink ground with reclining figure of a woman, the wooden base with green baize. 27cm wide, 11cm deep. There have been some of restoration. Some areas need attention. See all photos.
Auctioneers Notes: The Clock movement probably by Jacques-Joseph Castagnet (1730-c.1804), the Parisian clockmaker, on the rue Saint-Martin and Joseph Coteau (1740-1812) who was among the most distinguished enamellers in Paris at his time and was well known for his fine clock faces and dials.
