Group of two painted Japanese wooden doors, each depicting a falcon and waterfall, 19th century. (Each) height: 68 in x width: 37 in x depth: 2 in. Condition: Wear throughout consistent with age and use including some cracks, chips, scratches and small losses to the pigment along each painting, particularly the one with the falcon facing left. To the wood, there is also wear throughout consistent with age and use including chips to the lacquer along the extreme edges, some chips, and scuffs. There is a loss measuring approximatley four-inches by two-inches along the lower right corner of the door with the falcon facing left. Some wear to the versos including four felt tabs affixed to the corners of each door.

Sawaguchi Seio (Japanese, act. 19th c). Woodblock print on paper depicting two figures from "Fujisan no zu." Part of a larger 1848 map of Mt. Fuji. The map focuses on the sacred areas of the site while also denoting ways to climb the mountain. The print offered here focuses on two famous ascetics, Kakugyo Tobutsu (right) and his successor Jikigyo Miroku (left). Together these two founded the Fuji-ko cult which popularized the Mount Fuji pilgrimage, combined the various beliefs about the mountain together, and expanded the routes up the mountain. Utagawa Kunisada/Toyokuni III (Japanese, 1786-1865). Woodblock print diptych depicting a scene from the famous ghost story "Yotsuya Kaidan," which tells the story of a vengeful spirit of a young woman who was betrayed by her husband. Depicting the actors Kataoka Gado II as Tamiya Iemon and Bando Hikosaburo as the ghosts of Oiwa and Kobstoke Kohei. This scene depicts Iemon as he has nailed the corpses of his wife and her servant to a door to be pushed into a river. The print itself has a piece which can be bent down to show both sides of the door. (Left print) height: 14 1/4 in x width: 10 1/2 in. (Right print) height;: 14 1/4 in x width: 9 3/4 in.
